NXP Semiconductors and Belkin International, Inc. announced the demonstration of a “smart home” network at CES 2012. This is network is designed to help users control light bulbs which are assigned separate IPv6 addresses via a smartphone or tablet.
It was revealed that this network features a WeMo device from Belkin that will enable mobile devices armed with Wi-Fi to interact securely with smart home appliances using JenNet-IP. JenNet-IP is an ultra-low-power wireless connectivity software offered by NXP.
In a release, Sean McGrath, general manager, smart home and energy product line, NXP Semiconductors, said, “We’ve released a series of tremendously popular smart lighting and smart home control videos on YouTube featuring JenNet-IP, and are often asked, ‘Where can I get the router?’”
McGrath added that visitors to the CES were able to see a number of solutions, including an easy-to-use WeMo device from Belkin that can be attached to the home router. This WeMo device serves as a secure gateway between a smartphone and the Internet-enabled appliances in the network using JenNet-IP.
“We’re very excited that Belkin, a world-class provider of connectivity solutions, is bringing JenNet-IP into its new WeMo Home Automation ecosystem,” McGrath remarked.
According to Kevin Ashton, general manager of Belkin’s Conserve Business Unit, the WeMo Home Automation platform enables Belkin partners to develop appliances for realizing an Intelligent Home.
The ubiquitous Wi-Fi is crucial for everybody and there is a compelling need for low-power networking options to connect smart appliances and smart meters monitoring energy usage to make life more comfortable.
Officials emphasized that JenNet-IP consumes only one-tenth of the power required by Wi-Fi for offering ultra-low-power connectivity which offers support to several devices in a smart home network.
Recently Kwikset and Belkin entered a partnership agreement to launch new products that leverage Belkin’s newly launched WeMo system. The new products will enable any homeowner with a Wi-Fi network to monitor and control their door locks remotely from a smartphone.
