Kamstrup Powers Ahead in Netherlands, with 150k Meters Delivered

The Dutch energy distributor, Enexis, and Skanderborg, Denmark-headquartered smart metering provider, Kamstrup, recently celebrated their successful five-year relationship—a collaboration that has since resulted in the delivery of 150,000 smart meters to regional ratepayers.

Enexis B.V., based in Rosmalen, the Netherlands, engages in the installation, maintenance and management of the transport and distribution lines for gas and electricity. It services about 2.6 million customers daily.

The company is an independent grid administrator in the provinces of Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Flevoland (North East Polder), Overijssel, North Brabant and Limburg.

When Enexis in 2009 decided to deploy smart meters, Kamstrup was the only supplier that was able both to comply with the Dutch standard for Smart Metering, NTA 8130, and deliver the meters on time.

After Kamstrup won the first pilot project of 25,000 meters, Enexis placed continued orders at Kamstrup, and by February 2013, Enexis received a cumulative 150,000 electricity meters from Kamstrup.

Important for Enexis was that Kamstrup facilitated the possibility for Enexis to gain experience with smart meters on a fairly large scale and in a relatively short time.

Pierre Souren, manager Support Smart Metering at Enexis, commented, "Kamstrup [made]a substantial contribution to Enexis’ learning curve in the transition from traditional energy metering to smart metering that the energy market will experience."

The Dutch government has mandated that, by 2020, 80 percent of all Dutch households shall have a smart meter. Smart metering offers network operators the possibility of monitoring and improving their energy grid, and provides consumers with insight into their own energy consumption.

Among the objectives of the smart grid projects are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency and encourage the adoption of grid-tied renewable energy.

In related news, last week, Kamstrup announced that after completing several successful advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) initiatives in Chile, the company has opted to open a branch office in Santiago, in order to develop new projects and encourage an even closer service relationship with regional customers.
