Brazil 'Smartens Up' with eMeter Data Management for Seven Million More Customers

CPFL Energia, the largest non-state owned electric company in Brazil, will implement the eMeter Energy IP smart meter data management platform in a phased approach—initially deploying the platform to support its high- and medium-voltage ratepayers. CPFL’s eight distributors, which serve a total of seven million customers across its concession area, will integrate the management software with two advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) systems using eMeter AMI Adapter technology, as well as with the core enterprise systems for CPFL’s operating companies.

This project is the first Brazilian implementation of a meter data management (MDM) solution capable of supporting a full-scale residential metering rollout for a large utility.

CPFL also has selected Armonk, New York-based IBM (News - Alert) for smart metering data management and integration consulting. During the project, IBM will serve as the EnergyIP system integrator, providing consultation in governance, process design and best practices. IBM also will manage the planning, installation and configuration of the solution, as well as testing, go-live support and initial assisted operation.

“Our work with eMeter demonstrates our ability to deliver the solution at the quality level CPFL expects in order to meet their business strategy and transformation,” said Guido Bartels, general manager, Energy and Utilities industry at IBM and chairman, Global Smart Grid Federation.  “Our EnergyIP smart metering experts will ensure the proper delivery of the meter data management system that will help build resiliency and efficiency into their business while allowing a smooth and successful Smart Grid transition.”

CPFL Energia is a holding company that, through its subsidiaries, distributes, generates and commercializes energy in the Brazilian electricity sector, and also operates in the segment of value-added services. With 13 percent of the market share, CPFL Energia heads the distribution segment; serving 569 municipalities in the States of São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Minas Gerais.

San Mateo, California-based eMeter, a Siemens (News - Alert) Business since January 2012, offers a platform that provides utilities with easy access and powerful insights into all data collected through Advanced Metering Information (AMI). eMeter Energy IP enables utilities to analyze outages and events, monitor loads, gauge AMI health, and even protect revenue—in real time, as fast as the data is collected, with zero impact to business critical operations.

“CPFL Energia chose EnergyIP as the meter data management platform based on its proven track record, extensibility to support our multiple communication technologies and multiple operation companies,” said Mauro Carmello, manager of Operative Processes and Automation at CPFL Energia. “We believe the strength in eMeter’s platform and history of proven customer successes worldwide makes them the only energy information platform provider able to service our current and future needs.”

“We are thrilled to welcome CPFL Energia into our family of customers,” said Lisa Caswell, eMeter president. “CPFL Energia is one of the most forward-thinking Brazilian utilities harnessing the power of Smart Grid information to further improve delivery and reliability of energy. Additionally, we are pleased to add CPFL Energia to the joint IBM and eMeter success stories.”
