Synchronica Announces Mobile Gateway 4.0 to Enable E-mail on Any Handset

By Rajani Baburajan February 17, 2009
Synchronica, a provider of mobile e-mail and synchronization solutions to mobile operators and device manufacturers, announced the launch of Synchronica Mobile Gateway 4.0, a multi-protocol gateway that provides a true "Crackberry" service for the mass market.

The Mobile Gateway 4.0 extends mobile e-mail and data synchronization to virtually any mobile phone on the market. It enables e-mail on even the most basic of handsets and does not require any additional software to be installed.

Additionally, the Mobile Gateway 4.0 introduces multi-protocol gateways such as e-mail-to-SMS and e-mail-to-MMS gateways and Push-to-WAP/xHTML browser access. This service is ideal for emerging markets, where PC-based access is limited and entry-level devices dominate, Synchronica said.

Users of entry-level handsets send and receive e-mails as a standard SMS or MMS, and their replies are then converted back to e-mail. Mobile Gateway 4.0 consists of a document transcoding gateway. It allows MS Office attachments to be displayed on mass-market phones. This gateway also optimizes images for display on a mobile phone, thereby reducing bandwidth requirements.

A single gateway account can allow up to 5 email accounts. Google users can synchronize their Google contacts and calendar with any SyncML-enabled device. Using a new connector for Windows Live/Hotmail, Mobile Gateway 4.0 allows users to access their Hotmail and synchronize contacts with any SyncML handset. The gateway also includes connectors for business servers such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino.

“New mobile e-mail solutions seem to be announced almost every week, but Mobile Gateway 4.0 represents a real breakthrough,” said Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, in a statement. “Our vision is to enable mobile email and synchronization on virtually any handset and for any user, business or consumer, high-end N95 or entry-level Nokia 1100. This product truly delivers on the promise of a ‘Crackberry’ for the mass-market.”

The Mobile Gateway 4.0 uses open industry standards such as Push IMAP and SyncML to integrate with the native e-mail and synchronization clients built into more than 2 billion devices from all major handset manufacturers including Nokia, SonyEricsson, Samsung, Motorola and others, the company said.

Synchronica Mobile Gateway 4.0 will be displayed at this week’s Mobile World Congress, Barcelona.
