Esmertec today said that Sony Ericsson, a provider of mobile phones, has selected its Jbed Java Multitasking Virtual Machine to power its new multimedia XPERIA mobile phone range.
The first handset “X1” is expected to be available in selected markets in the second half of 2008. According to Sony, the XPERIA X1 is an arc-slider mobile phone featuring customizable “panel” interface designed for fingertip navigation. In addition, the 800x480 pixel touch screen device is equipped with a wide-pitch keyboard and Web 2.0 communication.
Ib Green, head of software at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, said that Esmertec has demonstrated its capabilities in delivering advanced mobile Java technology and to fulfill the “high requirements” when supporting the existing Java Platform strategy.
“Therefore, the smooth integration of Jbed with our XPERIA X1 makes Esmertec a key development partner to realize some of the X1 promises,” he added.
Esmertec officials pointed out that their company’s Jbed Java platform is integrated on X1, which ensures stable access to Java-enabled content on the phone. In addition, the Jbed platform provides richer content on phones. Officials said that application developers will have access to a scalable mobile software platform that enables them to create and deploy Java applications and services across all phones in the XPERIA range.
Also, Jbed can be integrated with Sony’s new technology, dubbed Capuchin. Officials pointed out that this will allow developers to utilize the “best attributes” of various technologies to create next-generation mobile applications.
“Sony Ericsson is shipping millions of innovative mobile phones each year and we are pleased that a world leader has recognized the strength and opportunities that our Jbed software technology offers inside mobile phones,” commented Thomas Hornung, CEO at Esmertec.
Esmertec is a provider of software platforms, applications and services to communication device manufacturers and mobile telecom operators. Earlier this week, the company announced the release of its Jbed Multimedia engine, targeting the next generation of home multimedia devices.
