I wanted to take the time to talk about an experience I had the other week in Canada. I was on a scenic Rocky Mountain train ride without wireless and Internet connectivity. However, I passed train signals and freight trains with miles of length, yet no available Internet.
I heard about the early surveyors and how much of an effort it was to discover a path for the track to be laid and the months long journey to gather the information. Those were different times.
At the IoT Evolution Conference, our speakers have talked about IoT's role in freight, rail and overall logistics management. As I sat on the train, I wondered how come, in the age of connectivity, connectivity was not readily available?
The answer was one of priorities, without cell coverage the train had to implement alternative connectivity solutions and passenger Internet was not a primary priority.
We are hitting a new plateau in the IoT market, where alternative wireless solutions are being deployed that include low power wide area systems, cellular antennas that support IoT devices.
As we approach the 50 Billion connected devices milestone, it occurs to me that we can get caught up talking about the new and we lose sight of the improved. There are a lot of devices that exist already that have been functioning just fine, like that train signal.
What then is the compelling reason to make the existing infrastructure connected?
I think the answer is dependent on the business priorities.
IoT Evolution Expo is not a show claiming that all connectivity has to be put in place today. We embrace the fact that the growth curve and the hype cycle are fundamentally different and anyone looking to implement IoT solutions must evaluate the resulting benefits to business processes, customer growth and functionality. IoT Evolution is the event that helps you make those critical decisions.
We want you to attend IoT Evolution not only because your future depends on it, but because your past may have opportunities for improvement.
If you attend IoT Evolution you will hear from thought leaders and peers, fears will be dispelled and you will get direction on how to develop ideas and set priorities when it comes to IoT planning and implementation.
If you are from an Enterprise, I have a special offer for you. Because our show has so many tracks, bring two of your coworkers along with you, all for the price of $2,595; for all three. Use this link to accept this offer. I hope you can join us.
Kind Regards,
Carl
