New Wireless Lighting Uses Half the Power, Brings Twice the Game

By Ken Briodagh April 28, 2015

The connected home market is starting to look like a basketball game, with all the teams running the score up as fast as they can in a race for the win. Now TTP and Mayflower have announced that they’re shooting from half court and hitting nothing but net. The partner companies on April 27 announced that they have developed a wireless smart lighting control system that boasts a 50 percent reduction in power consumption, as compared to existing smart lighting systems.

The MK3 design, as they’re calling it, is a Zigbee-based solution, with enhanced reliability, improved radio range and class-leading metering accuracy. It’s already qualified for sale in North America, and will be available soon.

“TTP believes that innovative solutions to manage and reduce energy consumption are key to a sustainable future, both in the U.K. and worldwide,” said Richard Sims, project manager, TTP. “We’re pleased to be part of this significant Smart City development.”

Using its smart lighting control node, Mayflower now controls and monitors more than 180,000 street lights, bollards and signs in the U.K. and Ireland, and there are more than 300,000 new orders for the solution. The biggest installation in Hampshire, U.K. has more than 90,000 units and over the next year, the city will have 50,000 more installed, making it the largest single smart street-lighting system in the world, and one that has already helped the region reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4000 tons, or 1600 cars, every year.

“It is testament to the dedicated team of professionals at Mayflower and TTP that this achievement has been reached. Mayflower continues to go from strength to strength, meeting the requirements of its existing customers while increasing sales in the UK and exploring opportunities overseas,” said Pat Mitchell, Director, Mayflower. “Market requirements continue to develop and our policy to listen and adapt to customer requirements is the key to Mayflower’s existing and future success.”
