ISG Report Highlights IoT Interest Despite 5G Concerns

By Maurice Nagle September 09, 2021

The Internet of Things takes a village. Deployments are on the rise; interest is increasing but can infrastructure keep up? The short answer is yes, however with talk of 5G turning to reality, it seems enterprise patience is wearing thin.

The 2021 ISG Provider Lens Internet of Things – Services and Solutions Report for the U.S. noted growing curiosity in leveraging 5G for enterprise IoT continues to grow amid deployment concerns regarding the next generation mobile technology

Specifically speaking, the report highlights spotty 5G deployments, tower location and misinformation as the IoT’s biggest detractors. That said, the enterprise faces the challenge of ensuring wireless network performance while waiting on MNOs to reallocate available spectrum to 5G.In the midst of this “transitional” period, U.S. enterprises are embracing IoT, and per ISG, connected vehicles and smart manufacturing continue to garner growing attention.

"5G hype is rampant, and not all spectrum types are available in a particular country or on a particular mobile network," said Ron Exler, principal analyst with ISG Research and author of the report. "Enterprises need to work with their network and IoT providers to manage the selection of replacement technologies in advance of shuttering events, preferably in conjunction with 5G deployment."

Change doesn’t happen overnight. 5G is on the tips of tongues everywhere, and will soon see its time in the sun. One foot in front of the other, one deployment at a time and the IoT reality will gain 5G status.

Are you eager for 5G?
