Fujitsu Connects Cows and Mooooves Farms Closer to IoT

By Ken Briodagh April 01, 2016

U.K. supermarket chain Waitrose wants all of the dairy cows selling milk to its stores to guarantee at least 100 pasture days each year. At Mobile World Congress in February, Fujitsu was showing off some connected cow pedometers that might help solve the regulatory problem for Waitrose, and many other livestock farmers looking to keep better track of their animals.

Iain Davidson, Marketing at Arkessa, one of Fujitsu’s partners, has published a blog on the project, and its ramifications, here. You should go read it.

He goes on to write, “Smart farming isn’t just about keeping track of livestock, however. The Internet of Things can help farmers regulate soil temperature and pH levels, monitor watering and fertilizing, and help with pest control. Bosch have come up with a solution specifically designed for asparagus producers, enabling access to data regarding soil temperature and sunlight levels using a smartphone app and helping farmers to moderate sun exposure through cloud-based data analysis. IoT technology is also being used to grow Smart Strawberries in Italy – Libelium sensors enable farmers to check the status of their strawberry crop remotely and to adjust temperature and irrigation parameters according to real-time data delivered to their smartphone.”

Agriculture is a tough industry – always chasing the dragon of humanity’s insatiable appetite and always hampered by the seemingly insurmountable supply chain problem. Modern technology has been providing ever more efficient solutions for nearly a century now, and it’s time to up the game to match the stakes.

The IoT is poised to help you feed the world, farmers. It’s time to get your milkshakes out of the yard.
