Most of discussions around M2M Connectivity are based in Earth-bound technology,be it wired or wireless, cellular or Bluetooth, or any of the other options. Now, a report has come out saying it might be time to look to the skies.

MarketsandMarkets recently published a report called “M2M Satellite Communication Market – Worldwide Forecast and Analysis to 2020”. According to MarketsandMarkets analysis, the M2M satellite communication market is estimated to reach $5.91 billion by 2020, at a projected CAGR of 11.9 percent from 2015 to 2020.

At present, there is demand for satellite communication solutions from various organizations to track information on a real-time basis through machine to machine systems all over the world. Many organizations are progressively implementing satellite-based solutions to improve their network connectivity and capacity across remote locations.

The focus of M2M satellite communication solution providers has extended from land, mobile and maritime industry to several other industries such as aerospace and defense, public sector, agriculture, and transportation and logistics. Moreover, there have been modern technological advancements in satellite systems from Low Earth orbit (LEO), C-band, L-band, Ku-band to Ka-band that have increased the usability of the M2M satellite services across all the major industry verticals.

Business organizations are demanding solutions that can assist them in tracking, monitoring, and management of their human and non-human resources at remote areas to improve organizational productivity, while adhering to certain industry-specific regulations, including the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System in the maritime sector, according to the report. Furthermore, the increase in data intensive communications such as text messages, emails and other digital text among enterprises has given rise to the demand for M2M satellite solutions that help transmit large data to their employees located in remote areas through satellite networks.

Presently, the satellite systems are not sufficient to meet the large and scattered user base demanding low-cost devices, with low-bandwidth needs and huge cost and energy constraints. Nevertheless, these satellite solutions offer a number of benefits in terms of cross-border coverage, accessibility, and safeguarding the ongoing communication, which encourage organizations to adopt M2M satellite communication solutions. M2M satellite solutions are becoming widespread and extensive solutions, as they allow enterprise to track and monitor asset, allow geo-fencing, along with providing help during emergencies by sending alerts to authorities.

In the next five years, M2M satellite communication solution vendors are likely to focus on reducing the cost involved in acquiring augmented bandwidth and enriched network devices, along with offering value-added services to the users. Industries such as the maritime and public sector are increasingly considering M2M satellite solutions as a crucial technology for proficiently managing and monitoring remote workforce. However, the lack of flexibility of these solutions within the existing infrastructure such as terminals, along with the cost involved in the procurement of new middleware, hampers the acceptance of M2M satellite communication solutions among other industries. The evolution in the M2M satellite communication market has given opportunity to the M2M satellite solutions providers, telecom network operators, and value added service providers to efficiently meet the growing need for mobility and higher bandwidth.
