Sleep Mode: Startup Wants to Make Bedtime a Smarter, Sleepier Place

By Ken Briodagh March 27, 2015

Are you tired of wasting those six to eight hours you spend sleeping, getting no analytics on yourself? Well, Luna is here to help. Luna has created a mattress cover that will turn your dumb, old bed into a smart, connected bed, designed to make plain old sleeping a better, more restful and more intelligent experience.

The product is the brainchild of partners and co-founders Andrea Ballarini, Massimo Andreasi Bassi, Matteo Franceschetti and Alexandra Zatarain. They will wrap a very successful Indiegogo campaign on March 28 that raised $1.1 million of a $100,000 goal for Luna and plan to have the cover shipping in August.

The Luna cover is designed to take all of the troublesome aspects of sleeping and automate them, while integrating it into other smart home tech like Nest, Beep, Emberlight and Lockitron. In fact, it will link to any wifi connected device or service supported by IFTTT. Those connections allow the cover to learn things like when you like to go to bed, or if you play music to sleep. It can lock your doors for you if you forget and you’re already comfy or predict your bedtime and warm your place to your preferred sleeping temperature for when you arrive.

It has two zones for heat, actually: one for each side. The temperature settings can be learned and automatic or set from a smartphone app. Embedded in the cover are sleep tracking sensors that monitor sleep phases, heart rate and breathing rate and transmit the data to the cloud for sleepers to review at their (awake) leisure. It also figures out when the best time to wake you up is and gently activates the smart alarm when you’re sleeping lightly to eliminate groggy mornings.

Not so sleepy anymore, are you?
