Semiconductor Corporations Merge to Make More Secure IoT

By Ken Briodagh March 20, 2015

Microsemi Corporation, a semiconductor and system solutions provider for communications, defense, security, aerospace and industrial markets, has made a $389 million bid to purchase Vitesse Semiconductor, another semiconductor company, which develops high-performance Ethernet-circuit solutions for carrier, enterprise and IoT networks.

Vitesse is known to be a leader in working with cellular infrastructure and networking 4G and Ethernet enterprise networks, and among its many products include sophisticated encryption methods for 4G LTE networks, which perhaps explains Microsemi’s interest. Building secure cellular networks for communication between M2M devices is a critical area of innovation in the IoT space, and getting access to industry-leading tech in that arena is a smart move for Microsemi.

Vitesse’s encryption solutions have the potential to be paired with Microsemi’s own on-chip security designs to make a solid and safe solution for automotive, industrial and embedded applications.

If the acquisition goes through, the joined corporation could become a major player in the M2M security marketplace. We’ll keep an eye on this one for you.
