Chocolate Bar Plug-n-Play Sensor Array Wins Tasty Prize at CeBIT

By Ken Briodagh March 20, 2015

A new sensor setup, called WunderBar, has won the Code_n prize at CeBIT. It was designed by Berlin startup Relayr, and the unique solution, created to provide developers with easy access to IoT data, helped the company defeat more than 400 international competitors for the prize. The winner was announced on March 20.

The idea behind the WunderBar was to help software developers that want to deploy M2M solutions but have no electrical engineering skills. It looks like a Wonka chocolate bar at first glance, but hidden inside each of the little pips is a sensor array for temperature, humidity, motion or other parameters. Each one can be separated and used on its own as part of a physical M2M device. Once deployed, the captured data is relayed through the Relayr open cloud platform to the developer for analysis. The winner of the Code_N prize gets about $35,500. This is the fourth year of the competition. Some of the runners up included a cloud security system, a networking solution and an indoor smartphone navigator app. For more on Relayr, click here.

CeBIT ended March 20, having hosted major announcements for the IoT industry by Samsung and revealed a variety of new technologies and startups. It is one of the largest technology shows of the year and is held in Hannover, Germany.
