Survey Sees Automotive Sensor Market Hitting $35.78 Billion by 2022

By Michael Guta June 17, 2014

The growth of machine-to-machine (M2M) has lowered the price of sensor technology to the point where it can be deployed virtually anywhere with unlimited scale. Farmers can now track each livestock the same way high-tech companies are able to monitor complex technology. These sensors are bringing everything together as part of the Internet of Things (IoT) by connecting infrastructures, homes, wearable technologies and the vehicles we drive. A new report projects the automotive sensor market to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.6 percent from 2014 to 2022, reaching $35.78 billion by the end of the forecast period.

The report, titled "Automotive Sensor Market by Product (Pressure, temperature, level, speed, MEMS, oxygen, Nox), Application (power train, safety & control, vehicle security, alternative fuel, telematics) and Geography - Forecast & Analysis to 2013 - 2022" provides an in-depth analysis of the automotive sensor market as the industry faces the challenges of integrating constantly evolving technologies.

Sensors are designed to measure a wide range of physical quantity or environmental characteristics. This can include temperature, speed, impact, noise and many other calculations so it can be used to provide valuable information to the driver, first responders, service providers and the manufacturer of the vehicle. The sensing performance this technology provides is making vehicles much safer for commuters, pedestrians and everyone that happens to be on the roadways.

The report looked at the technology on the basis of product and sensor type for temperature, pressure, level/position/oxygen, NOX, MEMS, magnetic, inertial and others, while at the same time evaluating their applications. The application of sensors varies greatly depending on many factors, but some of the uses the report examined were power train, body, electronics, vehicle security system, safety and control, alternative fuel, and telematics.

Some of the major players highlighted in the study include Analog Devices (U.S.), Asahi Kasei Corporation (Japan), ATI Industrial Automation (U.S.), Denso Corporation (Japan), Freescale Semiconductor (U.S.), Infineon Technologies (Germany), Measurement Specialties (U.S.), Robert Bosch Gmbh (Germany), Sensata Technologies (U.S.), Texas Instruments (U.S.) and others. The report divided the global market for automotive sensors into the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Rest of the world in terms of both revenue and shipment.

As with any evolving technology the implementation will greatly depend on consumer behavior, regulatory compliances and cost, but it is safe to say automotive sensor technology has now become an integral part of the industry; and as driverless cars become part of the landscape, more of the technology will be part of the automotive industry.
