Telstra is Planning a Public Wi-Fi Network

By Lavanya Rathnam May 22, 2014

Connectivity is the future, and every person in the world is expected to be connected to the Internet all the time. As a first step toward this connectivity, Telstra plans to provide public Wi-Fi to all of its customers in Australia.

This ambitious project is expected to cost $100 million for Telstra, and is likely to be implemented within five years starting from 2015. This network will be a public Wi-Fi, where customers can connect to the network using their personal devices. Additionally, customers can connect to their home network outside of their home, provided they are willing to share their network with others. The usage will be billed to their download limits, and this strategy is intended to help customers tap into the speeds of their own broadband allowance, irrespective of their location.

Other than a national network, Telstra is working out a deal with global Wi-Fi provider Fon to connect with 12 million international hotspots, to give users the choice to tap into their home broadband even while traveling out of the country. The details of the plan were unveiled by David Thodey, the CEO of Telstra, in Sydney.

This move to create such a massive network would be possible with Telstra's extensive infrastructure across a wide geographic area. Such a network is likely to give Telstra an edge over its competitors, though it is highly unlikely to implement it in all areas. Moreover, this public network will de-congest Telstra's packed 3G and 4G networks, and in the long run, the company will be able to save money because Wi-Fi infrastructure is cheaper than 4G LTE networks.

All in all, this is an ambitious project that is sure to see a lot of pitfalls. If it gets finally implemented, then it will be a big boon for users, and for technology as a whole.
