Telit, Recominte Partner on Luggage Tracking Solution

By Oliver VanDervoort April 21, 2014

Anyone who does quite a bit of traveling knows just how annoying it can be to try and keep track of your luggage from one stop to another. Some companies have decided to wage war on the lost bag with a number of different luggage trackers. Air France, KLM and Delta have partnered up to launch the eTrack system and now Brazillian firm Recominte is partnering with Telit Wireless Solutions as the two firms have unveiled the Tracer Tag. This particular tag is said to make it that much easier to track your luggage as it goes from one place to another.

Using machine to machine (M2M) technology, the Tracer Tag will actually allow people to track their luggage whether it is on the ground, or flying high among the clouds. This particular device, which is highly portable and will fit just about any bag you might want to track, comes amongst a growing number of people who find traveling that much more annoying amongst the growing number of people who lose their luggage in transit.

A report last year by SITA showed the number of mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers had risen to 6.96. The same report says that delayed and lost luggage cost the travel industry about $2 billion.

Telit and Recominte have decided that it is long past time to take action in this regard. The Tracer Tag includes Telit’s GL865-QUAD and JN3 M2M modules that give the device a “best-in-class” tracking solution. The long battery life of the device (up to 100 hours) means there should never be a trip you take where you don’t know where your luggage is at any given moment. The device is also very durable, working well in high humidity as well as low atmospheric pressure.

The device not only tells travelers where a bag is at any given time, it can also help deduce when damage may have occurred. The Tracer Tag can read sudden falls and temperature changes in order to tell users what might have happened.
