Novatel Tells Its Story of Mobile Computing, M2M Innovation

By Paula Bernier May 22, 2013

Novatel Wireless is all about defining new markets with groundbreaking products. That’s the word from Rob Hadley, chief marketing officer of the company, which specializes in mobile computing and machine-to-machine communications.

“Part of our brand is innovation,” says Hadley.

The company invented the MiFi mobile hotspot, was the first to introduce an LTE USB, and is moving M2M forward with the introduction of more complete solutions, Hadley explains.

Since introducing the intelligent mobile hotspot early in 2009, Novatel has signed on such big customers as AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

In addition to the MiFi solution, Novatel’s mobile computing group provides embedded modules to such customers as Dell, Google and HP. And at CTIA, Novatel also announced that Mesh Systems is using its embedded M2M module inside the Mesh gateway and that Sprint is using Novatel embedded module to further expand its solutions to the M2M ecosystem and customers.

“We’ve tested and integrated Novatel Wireless’ new CDMA2000 1x module and are very pleased with the performance and easy integration,” says John Rouse, vice president of business development at Mesh Systems, which provides M2M solutions to OEMs around the world. “Our new MeshVista EZRA Gateway Series utilizing the HS 3001 is rolling out in a number of environmental, retail and smart energy … applications.”

Novatel also recently unveiled a new telemetry and telematics solution called the SA 2100, which leverages the company’s intellectual property related to Mi-Fi, made it ruggedized, and added a variety of connectivity options. This product could be used in telemetry applications such as digital signage and kiosks, as well as for aftermarket telematics solutions to bring hotspot connectivity to commercial vehicles, Hadley says.

M2M is now really starting to take off in certain vertical segments, including insurance, which is leveraging on-board diagnostics to gather intelligence on user driving behavior so it can properly asset their risk and therefore offer more favorable rates to safer drivers. Novatel provides the MT 3000 and MT 3050 to address this opportunity. The modules can also work in fleet applications.
