ETSI, a provider of globally-applicable ICT standards, recently announced that it has developed a new set of standards which offer an extensive horizontal Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications layer of service.
Currently, M2M communication services are garnering a robust revenue growth pattern thanks to the significant increase in their deployment. Although large scale deployments of managed M2M services will soon be introduced to the industry, currently the landscape is fragmented which means companies are not as willing to invest, according to ETSI.
“The publication of the ETSI M2M Release 1 standards marks a new milestone for the M2M industry,” Enrico Scarrone, Telecom Italia, Chairman of ETSI TC M2M, said. “They unlock the potential for wide-scale deployment of M2M services and technologies, and encourage investment in new applications, which one day will bring us to a true ‘Internet of Things.”
ETSI’s Technical Committee for Machine to Machine communications (TC M2M) saw participation from leading players from across the industry to drive the development of the M2M communications set of standards.
The ETSI M2M Release 1 standards allow incorporation of multiple M2M technology choices into a single managed platform. ETSI M2M Release 1 has been developed over tested and mature standards from ETSI as well as standards from IETF, 3GPP, the Open Mobile Alliance and the Broadband Forum.
With the set of new standards in place, businesses will be provided with multiple benefits which include a reduction in the complexities of M2M deployments as well as a reduction in the time it takes to complete deployment of new M2M services. Businesses will also be able to benefit from significant reductions in CAPEX and OPEX, according to ETSI.
The ETSI M2M standards clearly outline various components of the framework which include M2M devices and gateways as well as related interfaces and applications and access technologies and the M2M Service Capabilities Layer.
They also outline traffic scheduling and security as well as device discovery and lifecycle management capabilities. The ETSI M2M Release 1 standards have been published in a set of three specifications which include: Requirements in ETSI TS 102 689; Functional architecture in ETSI TS 102 690; and Interface descriptions in ETSI TS 102 921.
