Home Gateway Initiatives board member Corrado Rocca presented the organization’s M2M-related services to industry leaders at the New Digital Economics Executive Brainstorm Series.
In a release, Rocca stated, “HGI’s work encompasses the use-case requirements, an overall technical architecture for home energy management, and the resulting technical requirements within the home gateway to support these applications. M2M technology potentially plays a major role.”
It was revealed that participants from leading telecom companies from across the globe took part in the M2M 2.0 session. This formed part of a research and industry transformation program from business model innovation firm STL Partners that is focused on the telecommunications, media and technology sectors.
Home Gateway Initiatives strives to optimize the way IP services are delivered to the home and between connected devices within the home. HGI was founded by major Broadband Service Providers (BSP) which includes leading digital home equipment vendors also. A major reason why HGI was formed was to translate Broadband Service Providers’ near and midterm service plans into published requirements for home network equipment and technologies.
Highlighting HGI’s planned work in the M2M field, Rocca said, “There will be a dramatic increase in the number and nature of ‘connected devices’ in the coming years. In the M2M arena, HGI seeks to develop specifications for a number of applications that will rely on this technology including home automation, monitoring, security and smart energy.”
Simon Torrance, CEO and Founder of STL Partners, remarked that with existing M2M strategies most telcos can address only a fraction of the potential market. They have to think more creatively, in order to capture a small proportion of the value from it.
New Digital Economics Executive Brainstorm Series sessions showed delegates how telcos can take advantage of opportunities and examined how to offer platform-based services beyond connectivity.
Recently Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) announced details of its largest test event to date, which will take place in the UK in November and December this year. This year’s event will feature strong involvement from NTT, one of the world's largest broadband service providers, as well as several major Japanese home gateway manufacturers. Home gateway and technology vendors from around the world are also well represented.
