Cisco has announced its Integrated Services Router (ISR) 819 Machine-to-Machine (M2M) gateway as part of its core routing infrastructure portfolio. The solution is being touted as the first step towards getting your company's network ready to face the growing number of machines requiring 3G wireless network connectivity to your enterprise/corporate network.
In a blog post on the company's website, Prashanth Shenoy, senior manager of marketing at Cisco, discusses the growing fascination with the “Internet of Things,” citing everything from vending machines, refrigerators and ATMs. Connecting those devices to your network wirelessly is proving to be an increasing challenge.
Cisco believes its new gateway can help connect more than 50 billion devices to the Internet by 2020. The technology will also highlight the ability to create business opportunities for customers in nontraditional networking environments.
The ISR 819 platform is designed specifically to meet the needs of M2M and micro-branch environments. It offers a number of unique features including a compact size which is lighter than a MacBook Air and smaller in length and width than an iPad. The solution is also hardened to withstand shock/vibrations, humidity, splash water, temperature, dust and other factors. It offers rich IOS services, including WAN optimization, comprehensive security, IPv6, quality of service and more.
Additionally, the ISR 819 offers a number of location-based M2M services including mobile IP, native SMS gateway, standalone GPS and dual SIM for higher reliability. One of the key differentiators of the solution is that it is all inclusive and may be managed remotely and centrally using Cisco Prime. Many other M2M deployments consist of hundreds or even thousands of devices. The ISR 819 also supports extensive 3.5G and 3.7G MIBs, offering network managers visibility into as well as control of devices. This includes devices connected to the router in remote sites.
Shenoy envisions a scenario in which vending machines equipped with the ISR 819 can find and talk to the nearest replenishing depot or vehicle, so machines may be refilled before popular items run out. This could boost customer satisfaction as well as revenue for coin-operated machines carrying low-value items as well as higher-value machines carrying items like MP3 players. The 819's standalone GPS and native SMS support could be installed in trucks and passenger vehicles to track them and provide text updates on their arrivals to passengers.
The company will present a session at the upcoming Interop - NY conference on October 5 at 11 a.m. at the Javits Center in New York City. The presentation will focus on the machine-to-machine market as well as real-world use case scenarios for the retail, healthcare, transportation, utility and public sectors.
The M2M Evolution Conference will be collocated with ITEXPO West, the world’s premier IP communications event, to be held Sept. 13-15 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX. M2M Evolution will include a series of analyst insight, case studies, and roundtable discussions and will show attendees how to exploit this technology to minimize destruction, fraud and theft across all vertical markets.
