TTUHSC Deploys Campus-Wide RFID Asset Tracking

By Carolyn J Dawson June 14, 2011

A few years ago, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center or TTUHSC in El Paso deployment of RFID asset tracking with a few doors and one handheld RFID reader. Radiant RFID’s Virtual Asset Tracker or VAT will be now used by TTUHSC across all buildings and departments on campus. Apart from tracking the physical location of assets, the university will also receive immediate notification of asset movement. An announcement in this regard has been made by Radian RFID.

In a release, David Porras, Director of Inventory, TTUHSC said, “We started working with Radiant in 2008 at the Clinical Simulation Lab. We were very pleased with the performance of the RFID solution and looked forward to rolling it out to the entire campus.”

Porras added that RFID asset tracking will be useful in many ways including audit response. The time take to conduct inventories will be shortened. RFID asset tracking will not only report asset disposition but also increase the overall security of the university’s assets. According to Porras, many different types of equipments are present around the campus. All assets within TTUHSC will be now tagged and tracked.

Kenneth Ratton, the VP of Sales at Radiant RFID, said, “The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center project is a testament to the overall benefits of Radiant RFID’s asset tracking solution. When RFID Journal highlighted our solution at TTUHSC in the October 2010 issue it had been two years since we had installed Virtual Asset Tracker.”

Ratton added that the company is pleased as its value continues to be recognized by a customer even two years after the initial installation.

The physical location of assets can be tracked by Radiant RFID’s Virtual Asset Tracker. The latest in RFID products from Motorola are used by this complete solution of RFID tags, readers, and software. Email notification, online asset transfer, check-in and check-out functionality and a full reporting suite are some of the features of Virtual Asset Tracker. Apart from having the flexibility to define the item information that customers would like to view, users can also create custom reports with Virtual Asset Tracker’s easy to use interface.
