Neosen Energy and Senet Expand LoRa Networks for Education, Medical and Business Institutions

By

A recent announcement from Senet and Neosen Energy kicks off the year with examples of the long-standing promise of IoT, including the use of new technology to address an existing problem more effectively and IoT being used for the greater good of society.

Could this also be an example of 2019 being the year we experience the “next wave” of IoT with tens of thousands and ultimately millions of connected devices being deployed for a single application?

Today’s students are part of the first generation to have grown up with smartphones, and they arrive on campus with lots of technology - from laptops and iPads, to fitness trackers, and (to the chagrin of their parents) gaming systems and unlimited streaming services.  It should come as no surprise that students expect to be able to connect their devices to a campus network easily and reliably, and that the school or university they are attending is making an investment in technology and network connectivity to provide a productive and safe learning environment.

With these demands in mind, global IoT connectivity, cloud-based software and services provider Senet has announced a partnership with Neosen Energy – provider of wirelessly charged systems and printable technologies for next-generation IoT systems. The partnership focuses on the widespread deployment of LoRaWAN IoT networks in schools, medical and business institutions, initially for asset and personnel tracking and safety systems with longer term goals of supporting a wide range of uses.  Think IoT-enabled lighting, parking, waste management, building controls, and even using the same network to support technology research in STEM classes.  All combined, creating a connected “smart campus” environment.

Neosen Energy aims to deploy campus safety products connected over Senet’s LoRaWAN network, offering the fastest response geo-locating system on the market.

Initially focused on the school campus ID Card market - estimated to support 31 million-plus users at US-based higher learning institutions alone - Neosen Energy has also partnered with SafeKard, a privately held company that uses patented, leading-edge technology that combines SOS location and access control in a personal wearable device. Neosen, SafeKard, and Senet are working to deploy the first SafeKard devices on campuses in the first quarter of CY2019.

The SafeKard solution - a slim state-of-the-art ID card holder - accepts any ID Badge Access Key Card and is equipped with a panic button to send an instant SOS with the user's ID and location. SafeKard is designed for a market that demands ID badges and delivers a superior personal safety solution by addressing the gap in the marketplace of one second to attack vs. seven seconds to dial 911 with cell phone-based solutions.

Paul Garrity, Neosen Energy's CEO said, "Collaborating with SafeKard and Senet introduces Neosen Energy to a fast-growing IoT ecosystem." He further added, "We are excited to have Senet as our network partner for the next wave of disposable and rechargeable LoRaWAN products. The adoption of these safety devices and solutions is just beginning but we anticipate that it will spread across numerous IoT applications that use ID cards, including college and corporate campuses, hospitals, elderly homes, construction sites, cityscape management associations, asset management, and advertising.”

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Neosen and Senet on the development of the latest campus safety devices and systems,” said Norman Harris, spokesperson for SafeKard. “Their expertise in end device architectures and IoT networks provides a solid platform to deploy reliable systems for a broad host of industries,” continued Harris.

As the name LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Networks) indicates - its range and low-power characteristics, along with its ability to extend indoors and below street level, make it ideal for deploying wireless sensors across an entire campus or large site at a very low cost.

Senet and Neosen Energy are working closely to target applications that have the potential to create entirely new ecosystems of innovation and engagement. Neosen Energy’s expertise in system design and cloud computing for disposable and rechargeable IoT devices, combined with Senet’s LoRaWAN expertise and unique model for IoT business engagement, provides a platform to accelerate the deployment of next-generation LPWAN IoT applications

“Senet’s Low Power Wide Area Virtual Network (LVN) is ideal for campus environments, providing opportunities for network operators and application providers to deploy large volumes of connected devices at a low cost while leveraging the same network infrastructure for a diverse set of IoT applications and use cases,” said Bruce Chatterley, CEO at Senet. “We are excited to be collaborating with Neosen Energy and their partner SafeKard to address campus safety and the creation of a smart campus platform for IoT applications across markets.”

The opportunities for Internet of Things applications and technologies to provide a positive impact on higher education campuses (and other campus environments) seem boundless.  The approach to deploying these solutions is also gaining some clarity.  Rather than building out a custom infrastructure to solve all challenges (the flawed “if you build it, they will come” approach to IoT), build dedicated products to solve one issue - in this case, student safety - prove success, and grow.
