IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Mitsubishi, Ericsson, Samsung

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, it’s all about IoT Healthcare, IIoT, Connected Transportation and more in this IoT Evolution Week in Review Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, Oracle and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will be working together to develop an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform for smart factories. With Oracle Cloud, Mitsubishi Electric has developed its new FA-IT Open Platform for factory automation. Using edge computing between devices and business applications, the new platform enables the rapid collection, analysis, and utilization of data at production site.

In a wonderful guest column from Brian Conroy, SVP, IDA Ireland, he writes about how the EU's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) goes into effect in May of next year and the fact that many car-related companies, like those in other industries, may not be ready for this substantial overhaul of data protection laws.

And now, the news: AT&T is deploying LTE-M technology across its network in Mexico. It completed LTE-M pilots in Tijuana and Puebla, Mexico in the third quarter of this year. It has recently also completed the first LTE-M international data session between the U.S. and Mexico.

Real-Time Innovations (RTI), an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) connectivity company, has announced the company’s first connectivity software designed to build layered-databus architectures for IIoT systems of systems: RTI Connext DDS 5.3.

Samsung announced with the Linux Foundation that is has become a platinum member of the EdgeX Foundry community, contributing to the evolution of IIoT frameworks by making interop and integration easier for customers who want the freedom to choose their IIoT solution components depending on the specific problem they are trying to solve.

Gemalto, a digital security company, recently announced the use of its IoT connectivity technology in OnKöl's mHealth solution, a smart hub designed to connect elderly people and people with special needs to family members and caregivers, with the goal of allowing them to live in their own homes safely, independently and comfortably. 

Big data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) can help solve some of the most challenging medical problems that we are currently facing as a society. Like any industry, the medical field can benefit from more efficiency introduced by big data analytics and IoT. For physicians, the two technologies would ensure that patients are treated faster and with more accuracy. 

The Dentacoin Foundation recently announced the success of its “Proof-of-Concept” Clinic, launched to address edentulous jaws (jaws without teeth) and fixed dental prosthesis (dental restorations which include dentures, crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, and veneers). 

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Dr. Brenda Connor, Head of Smart Cities and Intelligent Transportation Systems at Ericsson, to talk about Smart Cities and Smart Transportation.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.
