Honeywell, Huawei to Bring Gigabit Network to Brisbane's Skytower

Honeywell and Huawei have joined forces to deliver the future of smart buildings in a fast growing technological environment, bringing together Honeywell’s knowledge of improved quality of life and energy efficient solutions with Huawei’s expertise in ICT delivering the vision of smart residential living to Brisbane’s innovative Skytower.

This is due for completion in 2018 or 2019.

Brisbane’s smart skyscraper, a landmark building which is known as the Brisbane Skytower, is currently under construction in Queensland, Australia. It will be the city's tallest building when completed in the business district, and is set to be an iconic building aimed at housing residents that work in the city. When complete, it will boast advanced technology solutions from both Honeywell and Huawei to make it more viable, secure, and energy efficient.

The increasing understanding and use of Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and the growing use of cloud computing enables a seamless integration to make smart living a reality. Building networked, human-centric and intelligent buildings is a huge step and will evolve the building industry, increasing the rate of construction of smart buildings. 

With the Brisbane Skytower, a whole host of services need to be provisioned for, from telephone services, WiFi, and environmental awareness to connecting people to people, people to devices, and devices to devices. In order to do this, Honeywell and Huawei have built a gigabit network and an Optical LAN solution to achieve the desired smart network within the Skytower.

"We're excited to work with Huawei to build a gigabit network for Skytower, Brisbane's iconic 270-meter, 90-story residential tower. The network is the first-ever installation to utilize one common fiber optic cable for telephony/data and building services,” said Mark Dunn, Executive General Manager, Honeywell Building Solutions.

There were many challenges to consider such as the need for more bandwidth, speed, and stability. Residents now expect more access to applications from anywhere, and services available in rooms, elevators, and parking garages. Property management owners now require quickly deployable, easier to manage networks to reduce costs and improve efficiency. With the sheer amount of bandwidth intensive smart devices and applications including smartphones, 4K Internet TV, security, energy management, and sensing equipment, the use of a standard Internet connection would no longer suffice.

Honeywell’s building automation system will take charge of system integration which covers energy, ventilation, and air-conditioning, security protection facilities in addition to centrally managing various building sub-systems, providing a visualized management portal, alarm management, and work management services. These are designed to deliver efficient facility management, fast response times, and plans for maintenance. This merged with Huawei’s Passive Optical LAN (POL) solution can combine data, voice, and other currently insufficient systems into one optical network, which will provide the smart network inside the Skytower and together deliver a complete smart building solution.
