IoT Evolution Speakers: Vicki Barbur Speaks Out

By

The IoT Evolution Expo is the only Internet of Things industry event focused on Enterprise-level strategic planning and engineering-lead solutions to IoT and IIoT challenges. We have invited a world-class speaking faculty to join us and help provide our conference delegates with the critical business intelligence they need to formulate strategy for the next year.

We reached out to our speakers and asked them for a preview for their sessions to give you a little taste of what to expect at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas July 17 to 20 for the IoT Evolution Expo. To register now, click here.

Vicki A. Barbur is Technology Transfer Officer at The MITRE Corporation, where she works closely with engineers, scientists and MITRE Research Programs to stimulate innovation and facilitate collaboration among researchers, academic institutions and federal laboratories interested in developing MITREs innovations. As a not-for-profit organization that operates federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs), MITRE offers expertise in a wide range of technologies and transfers successful technology directly to its government sponsors or to industry through licensing, including commercialization and open source. Prior to joining MITRE in October 2016, Barbur was the Senior Vice President & Chief Technical Officer at Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC).

Barbur will be a panelist in the General Session panel discussion "IoT Security Strategies Mastering the Zones of Trust," in which she and the other panelsts will address the secuurity perception issues in IoT and how those problems have stalled IoT deployments. The panel will share experiences of including IoT in security plans and how IoT should be part of enterprise-wide security systems. She is also part of the faculty in the IoT Security Cerification program on Monday, during which she will teach a session on "Industrial Internet Security Concerns." This session covers identity theft, cyber-attacks in the enterprise or Industrial Control System (ICS) architecture. Further, Barbur will address the current state of IIoT security, outline what technical solutions can be identified to close the gaps regarding cyber security.

IoT Evolution World: What will be some key points you plan to hit in your sessions?

Vicki Barbur: Identity theft happens despite all attempts to protect personal information, and it can be devastating event for the individual. Cyber-attacks occur similarly in an enterprise and/or its Industrial Control System (ICS) architecture, also delivering devastating impacts for the success of the business, and impacts clients and customers alike indirectly.

IoTEW: Can you identify a few important trends influencing your sector of the IoT which will shape the path of the industry?

VB: Recent studies involving individuals either participating in or closely involved with advanced manufacturing where the ‘digital thread’ has become a norm in industry have revealed additional information about what is and what is not being done to protect an enterprise from such attacks. From this assessment, a series of outcomes evolved that address two types of issues facing companies who rely on advanced manufacturing and digital design as well as a heavy component of digital integration inherent in their supply chain infrastructure.

IoTEW: What are the biggest challenges facing the IoT? What are some important tools needed to overcome them?

VB: The limitations result typically from limited availability of capabilities and resources, creating a significant gap in the digital architecture, thus the integration of information and operational technology comprising the overall enterprise. Unfortunately, the small to mid-sized players are less well-equipped to support the implementation of even current cyber controls and infrastructure required to minimize potential breaches, frequently due to the lack of know-how.

IoTEW: Which vertical markets have the most to gain from IoT implementation? Which are leading and which are still behind the adoption curve?

VB: Both large and small entities have their own challenges; no company irrespective of size is immune, nor are they likely to be practicing the kind of cyber hygiene that universally eliminates every attack vector.

IoTEW: What are you most looking forward to attending at the Expo?

VB: Exhibition, face to face meetings with vendors and exposure to new technologies and capabilities.
