IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Trump, Cisco, Qualcomm

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about Trump, 5G, improving the world through IoT and more. Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), a key, top-ranked U.S. science and technology think tank, issued a scathing criticism of the Trump administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2018 as being terrible for innovation and new economic growth. ITIF pinpointed several programs that it said would be would be particularly damaging if cut in the way the administration has proposed, including The National Science Foundation and U.S. Trade and Development Agency.

We had a great guest post from Dr. Diane Schleier-Keller, Business Strategist, who writes about how IoT might be making the world a safer place through sustainability, security, accessibility and better health. In addition to creating a more connected world, she says, the Internet of Things is also helping us to make the world a safer place, not just for humans, but for the environment we share it with.

And now, the news: Qualcomm Incorporated has announced that it has priced a public offering of senior unsecured notes in a combined aggregate principal amount of $11.0 billion and it intends to use the proceeds to fund a portion of the purchase price of Qualcomm's planned acquisition of NXP Semiconductors N.V. and other related transactions as well as for general corporate purposes.

Mobile Experts has recently released new market research that describes a cross-section of 5G costs and investment predictions. What it seems to show is that, although the telecom industry is heavily hyping up 5G, the hard financial calculations the firm did to determine the applications and scenarios where 5G can be successful indicate that pure speed and lower latency are not going to be enough to encourage adoptions of 5G.

Cisco has released a new IoT platform with the goal of helping businesses build more intelligence into the network by releasing tools that pull technology components and business processes together.

Leti, a technology research institute of CEA Tech, has said it has developed the world’s first wireless transceiver dedicated to ultra-narrow band (UNB) communication.

Qualcomm plans to commence the first eMTC/NB-IoT/GSM (LTE Cat M1/NB1 and E-GPRS) multimode field trials in China, with China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) and China's leading smart bike sharing company, Mobike.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Magnus Jern, Chief Innovation Officer, DMI, to talk about the recent acquisition of Lochbridge and how that deal brings DMI into the core of the IoT with Connected Transportation, Healthcare and systems integration applications.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
