IoT Evolution World Week in Review: IBM, Whirlpool, Samsung

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about predictive analytics, smart factories, encryption and more. Let’s get industrial, shall we?

In our lead story, we looked at a new IBM study, in which insurance executives report seeing three factors as most important to the future of the insurance industry: technology, regulation and market factors. In terms of technology, 71 percent of insurers indicate they have begun using cognitive technology to better prepare for the future.

We had a great guest post from James Ramey, CEO of DeviceBitsm, who wrote about the Samsung Galaxy S8 launch and how it shows a new trend in the customer service experience industry: predictive analytics.

And now, the news: To further the goal of wireless innovation as part of the FCC's Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) initiative, LEMKO and Federated Wireless reportedly have agreed to work together on a Private LTE solution, based on CBRS shared spectrum.

Whirlpool Corporation announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Yummly, Inc. Yummly, founded in 2009 by David Feller and Vadim Geshel, is a food-centric technology company that provides personalized recipes and cooking resources.

Everynet, an LPWA provider, launched its new patent-pending Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) update capability for LPWA networks, which is designed to help device manufacturers, LPWA network operators and end users overcome the challenges with LPWA’s low data rate networks by simplifying firmware updates for IoT devices.

InfoSec Global (ISG) and Synopsys recently announced a new collaboration with the goal of introducing a comprehensive, embedded Root of Trust solution that integrates InfoSec Global's Agile Cryptography capabilities with Synopsys' DesignWare tRoot Hardware Secure Module.

Penta Security Systems this week showcased its smart factory security solution “Penta Smart Factory Security.,” and also unveiled its smart metering security solution and connected car security solution, AutoCrypt.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Paul Hughes, Director, Strategy, Netcracker, to talk about monetizing the IoT, new revenue models and the growing connectivity economy..

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
