IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Cisco, SAS, Z-Wave

By

Welcome to the IoT Evolution Week in Review, my friends. This week, we’ve been talking about analytics, 5G, and metric tons of IoT industry strategic analysis. Let’s get into it, shall we?

In our lead story Cisco and SAS announced at this week’s SAS Global Forum a new platform solution designed to lower this risk: the Cisco SAS Edge-to-Enterprise IoT Analytics Platform. This is the industry’s first edge-to-enterprise platform for IoT analytics backed by a Cisco Validated Design, according to the announcement. Designed to be both flexible and scalable, the platform leverages the strengths of each contributing company with the goal of helping enterprises apply analytics at various layers of the network based on volume, velocity and latency requirements.

We had a great guest post from Special Correspondent Cynthia Artin, who attended the Enterprise IoT Summit in Austin, Texas, where she caught up with John Nye and enjoyed his discussion of Senet’s vision for connected cities, towns, campuses, and other public spaces.

And now, the news: Leti, a research institute of CEA Tech, has announced a new European and South Korean project, 5G CHAMPION, to deliver a fully integrated and operational 5G prototype in conjunction with the 2018 Winter Olympics, to be held in South Korea.

The United States Air Force (USAF) does nothing by halfway measures. Over the last month, the Top Gun top brass has deployed a squadron of Smart Base initiatives, at Los Angeles and Tinker, both with Honeywell. Now, with the help of AT&T, the USAF is launching a pilot program at Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery, Alabama.

IoT and technology research firm Frost & Sullivan has released a new report on Automotive Digital Transformation, and the company’s analysts say the report indicates that the opportunities are just beginning.

In November 2016, the Z-Wave Alliance Board of Directors voted to mandate that all Z-Wave devices submitted for certification must include its advanced Security 2 (S2) framework, and the deadline was April 2, and, according to the announcement, it will now require strict and uniform adoption of a new security protocol for all Z-Wave devices receiving certification.

According to a recent announcement, a new report from IoT analyst firm Berg Insight has ranked connected pallets as the most promising greenfield IoT application that is enabled by the new wave of cellular and non-cellular Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) technologies.

Industry analysts at Beecham Research in a new ‘Internet of Insurance Sector Report’ have said that insurance companies should build up an accurate and detailed picture of behavior using IoT in order to offer precisely-customized products and services to deliver better value for money and increase customer retention.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published recently, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Dirk Schlimm, EVP, Geotab, to talk about Connected Transportation.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
