IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Jameson, Thales, Dyn

By

Top of the weekend to you, my friends! It’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend, and we’re feeling the craic here at the IoT Evolution Week in Review. We’ve had the luck of the Irish this week in the IoT, and you’ve found the pot o’ gold.

In our lead story this week, iconic Irish Whiskey brand Jameson Whiskey has announced an IoT implementation designed to celebrate and activate the launch of its new limited edition bottle range, which will incorporate Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Created in partnership with Dublin-based artist Steve McCarthy, the bottle’s added connectivity offers users the chance to experience the rich history of Jameson.

We had a great guest post from Matt Smith, Head of Cortet Engineering, he aims to help your decision-making process by explaining the IoT existing technologies and attempting to demystify the ocean of IoT protocols. He goes through a framework for categorizing the various technologies and explains some criteria on how to compare and evaluate these.

And now, the news: To celebrate 50 years of the ACM Turing award, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) recently brought together some of the world’s foremost Internet experts, including Vint Cerf, one of the ‘fathers of the Internet,’ to answer questions about how far the Internet has come, where it’s headed and the potential impacts, both positive and negative, of IoT.

In a recent announcement, Thales, a security provider for critical information systems, cybersecurity and data, has released the results of its 2017 Thales Data Threat Report, Advanced Technology Edition, which was issued in conjunction with analyst firm 451 Research.

David Williamson, CEO, EfficientIP, wants to help you defend against those evil IoT botnets. Nobody was expecting it: Spotify, down; Paypal, unresponsive; Twitter, offline. It was a day that will never to be forgotten by Dyn, the cloud DNS provider at the center of the debacle. What went wrong?

In a recent announcement, Steve Brumer, partner at 151 Advisors, has announced that he’s been selected to join the Special Council at DPOUSA, a financial platform that provides companies with access to an investor base of over 30,000 accredited investors and financial institutions.

Over the last few years, I have seen some major trends forming across nearly every vertical in the consumer and industrial spaces, and these trends looked like they were pointing toward a future where the IoT would indeed be improving the lives and living conditions of people all over the world, and so I decided to begin writing a book in order to look for patterns in those trends. That book, published this month, is called “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things.” In a new weekly series, we’ll be previewing chapters for you to read in the hopes that you’ll like enough to read the whole thing.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Grant Asplund, Vice President of Sales and Business Development at CENTRI Technology, about security, privacy and the best way to make IoT safer and more trusted.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
