IoT Evolution World Week in Review: IBM, Honeywell, Samsung

By

Hello folks. What a week it’s been here at IoT Evolution HQ. We’ve had some big stories and some cool stuff happening here, and it’s time we package it all up for you in this Week in Review.

In our lead story this week, IBM dropped all sorts of news about several IBM Watson IoT executions and plans for the next few months, including partnerships with VISA, Ricoh, and several others. There’s a lot to cover here, so go get into it.

We had a wonderful guest post from Dr. Jans Aasman, CEO, Franz, where we learned about how the IoT will become part of Cognitive Computing. The artificial intelligence capabilities of cognitive computing are ideal for the speed and size of the IoT, while the IoT provides the data quantities needed to optimize the value—and ROI—of cognitive analytics options, he wrote.

In the top stories out of last week’s IoT Evolution Expo, we begin with the IoT Evolution Expo keynote speakers, who dropped a metaphoric metric ton of practical knowledge on attendees. Expert industry implementers Alex Brisbourne of KORE, Maciej Kranz of Cisco, and Mary Beth Hall of Verizon together presented a message of real-world applications designed to take solutions out of the proposal stage and into the field. And, as the show wrapped up, the editorial board of IoT Evolution evaluated each sponsor and exhibitor to find the most exemplary examples of technologies and implementations that advanced the IoT industry, and named the Best in Show.

And now, the news: Honeywell has announced a multi-million dollar, multi-year contract to implement a new airfield ground lighting control and monitoring system at Singapore Changi Airport, Southeast Asia’s busiest hub and one of the most frequented airports in the world. The Honeywell system will help Changi Airport safely and efficiently accommodate aircraft traffic.

Avaya dropped a new solution designed to help companies mitigate cyberattacks that can occur through IoT connected devices. This security and management solution, Avaya Surge, formerly SDN Fx Healthcare, is designed to run on any vendor network and enable companies to protect valuable data from unauthorized access through IoT devices.

The growth of the IoT holds promise for innumerable fields. However, it also raises a bevy of security concerns and the regulators have not adequately kept pace, according to a new policy study by R Street Tech Policy Fellow Anne Hobson.

Samsung revealed a report that indicated that, by 2020, companies which have not opened borders to competitors, innovators and a new generation of independent freelancers will struggle to prosper in what Samsung is calling the ‘Open Economy.’ This new Open Economy will rely heavily on freelance workers, call for startup culture and absorption to lead innovation and, potentially the hardest point, a new kind of collaboration between former competitors.

On the IoT Time Podcast, I’ve had quite a busy few days. I sat down at the IoT Evolution Expo with Steve Brumer, Partner at 151 Advisors, about the future of the IoT. Jeff Patton, GM, Connected Home Product Management & Innovation, GE Lighting, and I got together to talk about Smart Home, Intelligent Lighting and, dare we say it – changing the world. Finally, Dennis Hamann, CEO, Mobelisk, was good enough to chat with me about supply chain issues, connected transportation, and the importance of mobile devices for interfacing with the IoT. If you are a listener of the podcast, make sure to use the special IoT Time discount code to register at a discount for the IoT Evolution Expo. Of course, you’ll have to listen to an episode to get the code.

Finally, this week, we quietly published “IoT Time: Evolving Trends in the Internet of Things,” a new book by yours truly, Ken Briodagh, about the ongoing influences shaping the IoT. To get a digital copy, find it on Amazon for $0.99. A print edition is also available on Amazon for $14.99.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
