IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Comcast, AT&T, Honeywell, Amazon

By

Hey folks. It’s finally cool enough to suit me here in New England, but as Hurricane Michael looms over Florida and the rest of the southeastern U.S. after ravaging the Caribbean, we’re hoping for a swift recovery for all the folks affected. Let’s get into some IoT news, shall we?

In the first of our lead stories this week, Comcast announced its new IoT product, machineQ, which the company called a new business trial venture focused on building b-to-b solutions and a platform for the Internet of Things. As a part of machineQ, Comcast will work with partners in proofs of concepts.

In one of many news items from AT&T this week, the company announced that it is working with technology leaders to show how new LTE-M technology will bring the IoT to a new generation of devices and markets. It plans to pilot the LTE-M network in the San Francisco market starting in November and it will launch the technology across its commercial LTE network in 2017.

In a great guest post from Devavrat Shah, Jamieson Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, our guest asks the question of how data scientists can extract meaningful insights and accurately predict customers’ preferences in the age of big data. He discusses these “recommendation engines” and offers three tips to taking advantage of them.

And now, the news:
Honeywell announced that it has been awarded two new regional smart grid projects in Mexico by a consortium appointed by the country’s federal electricity company, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), to manage its smart grid initiatives.

The IoT is taking to the air over at Verizon, with the announcement of its new strategy to drive innovation and wide-spread adoption for in-flight wireless connectivity through its Airborne LTE Operations initiative. The plan has been in the works for more than two years, according to the announcement.

AT&T and Amazon Web Services have announced that they have come together in a multi-year, strategic alliance agreement to optimize delivery of integrated solutions built on the companies' respective cloud and networking capabilities. The companies said that the collaboration is designed to help customers more efficiently migrate to and utilize the AWS Cloud with the AT&T network.

The Online Trust Alliance has released its OTA Consumer IoT Security & Privacy Checklist, which includes steps that consumers should take to help increase their own security, privacy and safety in the Smart Home and with connected and wearable technology, and other IoT devices.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Scott Schwalbe, CEO, NimbeLink, to talk about Automated Cars, connectivity in the IoT, and I challenged Scott to write the One Standard to Rule Them All. This episode is sponsored by the IoT Evolution Expo. To become a sponsor of IoT Time, please email or tweet me.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now is the time to put into your calendar the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, complaints or compliments, please send them to me, editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
