IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Verizon, Autodesk, Miami

By

Hello, friends. This is the IoT Evolution World Week in Review, and there’s no time for gilding the lily, so let’s not pussyfoot around any further.

In our lead stories this week, Verizon made two big consecutive moves to dig deep into the Connected Transportation industry, while the getting is still good. The company has announced that it will buy Fleetmatics Group, a major global provider of fleet and mobile workforce management solutions, for about $2.4 billion. In addition, it will add Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) technology and services to its Verizon Telematics subsidiary by acquiring Telogis, Inc., a private company based in Aliso Viejo, California. Meanwhile, In an IoT Evolution Exclusive, Systech Corporation is set to announce next week that it will add new capabilities to its SysLINK IoT hardware gateways to enable local intelligence. The new suite will be called SysSCRIPT Lite, and will be added to the entire line of gateways at no additional cost.

In a great guest post from Nicolas Gross, Applications Director at Microwave Vision Group, we learned about the coming of 5G and how this race to the standard is going to change the IoT.

And now, the news:

Anuj Agrawal has joined Earth Networks as its chief marketing officer. Earth Networks offers connected solutions that address greenhouse gas, lightning, and weather.

Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) has announced that it will spend $33 million to modernize its EASY Card revenue management system, with the help of Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), part of Cubic Corporation.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I sat down with Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist & Technology Evangelist at Greenwave Systems to talk about the meeting of IT and IoT, why security matters and some bits of geeky fun. I also grabbed some time with Bryan Kester, Head of IoT at Autodesk about smart design for the IoT and why Autodesk is smart to be working at the OEM level. The first of the special video episodes from the IoT Evolution Expo are live on our new YouTube channel, so take a look and let me know what you think.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Now’s the time to put the next IoT Evolution Expo, to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into your calendar. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, input or abuse, please send it to editorial director Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh.
