IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Shell, Dell, SanDisk

By

Hey folks, Happy April Fool’s Day. This is the IoT Evolution World Week in Review, no kidding. We’ll get to the news in just a bit, but first a quick reminder about the IoT Evolution Expo in Las Vegas, July 11 to 14. If you want to get in on it as a sponsor or exhibitor, now’s the time, so hook up with Matt Gleeson, our Biz Dev maestro. For real.

And now, the news:

The IoT is finally moving from hype to execution, but for the mass of onlookers, the time is now for proof. As we move into the next year, we here at IoT Evolution World are looking to highlight case studies from the IoT that will show where the industry really is right now. The first one is courtesy of Bsquare. The company is showing off a series of use-case-specific proofs of concept with multiple customers across disparate industrial sectors for its DataV solution.

Shell Nigeria has just reaped $1 million worth in efficiency-driven savings, with the help of Ingenu. Increased efficiency is the first major attainable advantage of the IoT, and it can deliver significant business rewards, which will lead to global energy transformation. This is the first step.

An IoT startup calling itself Movover has launched a connected car application in partnership with a major Korean automaker. The company said the app is designed to detect cars in other lanes, especially in the blind spot, when a driver has signaled a lane change. If there is another car in the way, and it doesn’t make way quickly enough, the Movover system will automatically trigger LEDs in the headlights and taillights to make a culturally understood, “offensive gesture” indicating that the offending driver has remained too long in the path of its owner.

Where’s the world’s largest casino center? It’s located at Macau, on the mainland of China. The casino uses and relies on Avaya, a provider of IoT-enabled customer service solutions for multi-channel engagement, in order to increase productivity and enhance financial performance.

This week on the IoT Time Podcast, I spoke with Martin Booth, Director of Marketing for Automotive and Industrial at SanDisk, to talk about storage, security, privacy and how we're going to use all this Big Data; and with Joyce Mullen, ‎VP/General Manager GLOBAL OEM and IOT Solutions at Dell, to talk about systems of IoT devices, why environmental installations have real impact, and how IoT will save the world. Also, I make more bad jokes, at which no one laughs.

There’s plenty more to read, listen to and watch, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Keep the IoT Evolution Expo in Fort Lauderdale in your calendar. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, input or abuse, please send it to our editorial director, Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh. And keep laughing.
