IoT Evolution World Week in Review: SAP, Stanley Black & Decker, Cubic

By

Well, IoT Evolution World, welcome back. I hope you’ve had a lovely week. IoT Evolution Expo is getting pretty exciting. My favorite bit of news this week was that Cisco will be sending John Oberon, Vice President, IoT Software Platforms, to keynote. He leads the teams responsible for developing platforms for developers to use in order to tap into the power of Cisco’s IoT infrastructure capabilities. He is literally at the meeting of IoT and IT. And I think that’s awesome. If you want to get in on the action, hook up with Matt Gleeson, our Biz Dev maestro.

But now: the news. And it’s been a hell of week for that, too.

Fully autonomous automating got quite a bit closer this week, thanks to a recent launch by Ireland-based Cubic Telecom. The company has created a multi-national, multi-carrier connectivity network for IoT-enabled cars across Europe. This LTE platform is the biggest in Europe for M2M and connected car applications and the special SIM will seamlessly swap networks as drivers cross boundaries, always searching for the fastest signal – all under one subscription. Drive on, you mad and mental ones.

Meanwhile, global smart cities have been getting a boost thanks to SAP. The company has set itself the goal of fixing the problems with urban life around the world by addressing the complex challenges in fixing the way cities manage infrastructure, visitor experiences and citizen quality of life with IoT solutions. And it’s working.

In the Industrial IoT, we’ve had a few leaps this week. First up: Stanley Black & Decker. In the newest development for the IoT-forward company, it has invested in the systems of View Technologies and installed them in its own facilities. It enables retailers, manufacturers and logistics firms to track billions of items incorporating RAIN RFID (Passive UHF) tags, providing them access to real-time data to enhance operational efficiencies.

At the same time, we had a great guest piece from Brad Gilbert at Freewave Technologies about why the IIoT is inevitable.

In a very fun column, Jordan Stone of Notion told us that voice controls are the future of IoT controls. We hear you, Jordan.

There’s plenty more to read, so visit us on IoT Evolution World for all the IoT news, my friends. Keep the IoT Evolution Expo in January in Fort Lauderdale in your calendar. We’re always looking for speakers, especially on the subjects of security and drones right now. Also, please get in touch with us when you have stories. As always, if you have questions, comments, input or abuse, please send it to our editorial director, Ken Briodagh at [email protected] or on Twitter @KenBriodagh
