Wind River Introduces Developer Site; Sets Out to Drive Innovation at the Intelligent Edge

By Arti Loftus March 03, 2020

Until recently, the developer community has not been able to keep pace with the accelerated growth of digital transformation and the increased workload on IT departments, particularly within enterprises. Things have changed since the development of applications that were confined to small workgroups using legacy toolkits. Developers are now able to leverage enhanced tools through shared services, the cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT), to name a few. While there are large developer communities in open-source software (for example, Linux Foundation projects) and real-time communications (for example, Twilio), there are not many developer communities focused on embedded systems that can provide the tools and support which empower developers to innovate.

Today, California-based Wind River announced Wind River Labs, a site that is focused on development and innovation. Technology experts can use this site to access current software projects, open-source integrations, proofs-of-concept, experimental software, and new technologies, including the first-ever freely available VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) software developer kit (SDK) for the developer community.

The company shared that the site allows for collaboration between developers who are existing Wind River customers and non-customers to innovate by enabling capabilities such as machine learning and computer vision. Edge developers have the chance to work together with other software engineers that are tackling similar challenges as well as software engineers who created the projects.

“Our engineering and technology teams are great innovators, and work on a portfolio of assets and technologies that are critical to enabling intelligent edge systems; and while Wind River has embraced open community collaboration for decades, we haven’t had an easy way to collaborate on bleeding edge technologies, share ideas through code, prototype full systems, or allow developers to geek out, until now with Wind River Labs.”

With the availability of the VxWorks SDK which includes an open-source board support package for Raspberry Pi and UP Squared hardware, software developers are now able to download the latest version in addition to projects like ROS (Robot Operating System) 2 and start prototyping and designing applications quickly on the company's operating systems.

"With the amount of software content proliferating, and autonomous and intelligent systems significantly growing in relevance, driving collaborative innovation is more important than ever," said Gareth Noyes, chief strategy officer, Wind River. "Wind River Labs gives developers early access to cutting edge software projects, and allows the sharing of ideas through working code, examples, and recipes for technologies and community projects."
