The OpenFog Consortium and the IEEE Communications Society recently announced the Fog World Congress, a multi-day conference and exhibition on fog computing and networking, which will take place October 30 to November 1 at the Santa Clara Marriott, in California.
Fog computing enables rapid, secure processing of critical data-dense applications, addressing inherent challenges that neither cloud nor edge can resolve alone. Fog distributes computing, storage, control and networking services, enabling real-time data analytics, supporting time-critical local control, connecting and protecting vast and diverse resource-constrained devices, and overcoming network bandwidth and availability constraints.
“Supporting complex, emerging systems and applications, such as the IoT, 5G mobile systems, embedded AI, Big Data and edge analytics requires a new computing and networking model,” said Dr. Tao Zhang, OpenFog co-founder, IEEE fellow and general chair of Fog World Congress. “Without fog computing, the vision we have of a future with autonomous cars, advanced drones and an internet of everything simply can’t happen.”
The conference includes four tracks on technology, industry, research and interactive events. Featured speakers will discuss autonomous vehicles and industry use cases, and lead technical sessions.

Technology: The technical challenges and how-to’s of design and deployment
Industry: Case studies showcasing implementations and fog-enabled innovations in factories, cities, energy, transportation and more
Research: Invited and peer-reviewed research on leading areas in fog computing and networking
Interactive: Facilitated interactive roundtable discussions and fog hackathon
In addition to speaker presentations and discussions, Fog World Congress will feature a “Fog Tank,” which is designed to give fog-focused entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch their startup company’s vision to a panel of venture capitalists. A hackathon, also to happen during the event, will inspire competition among industry experts and student teams to solve challenges related to energy management for smart buildings, while the planned social impact workshop will drive dialog on the impact of how fog will shape the future.
